“Music can change the world because it can change people.” – Bono
Meet the Band Director
I am thrilled to continue our tradition of excellence within the band program here at Switzerland Point Middle School. Having served as your Band Director at SPMS for the last 8 years, I remain incredibly proud to lead this program and help our students discover a lifelong passion for music.
Middle school is a pivotal time for growth, and music education provides adolescents with much more than just technical skill. Our program is designed to foster a supportive environment where every student can find their talent, master their instrument, and experience the incredible feeling of performing as one cohesive ensemble. It serves as a vital outlet for self-expression and emotional development during these formative years. Beyond the notes on the page, the band offers students a unique sense of camaraderie. It provides a welcoming community where they can build lasting friendships and experience the rewarding challenge of working toward a shared goal.
Our program is designed to keep students engaged with a variety of exciting opportunities throughout the year, including:
- Seasonal Concerts: Showcasing our progress and hard work for families and friends.
- Augustine Holiday Parade: Representing our school in historic St. Augustine is a local tradition.
- District Music Performance Assessments: Challenging our musicians to reach new heights of technical mastery and getting tips from our state’s best teachers.
- Annual Theme Park Trip: Celebrating our achievements together with a fun, year-end group field trip.
My foundation in band began at Fletcher Middle School and Fletcher High School in Jacksonville Beach. From there, I earned a Bachelor of Music Education at Florida State University. I am actively involved in the Florida Bandmasters Association in various capacities at the district and state levels in an effort to help grow and improve the band experience for students at ALL schools, including our own.
I have spent the majority of my career working with middle school musicians, and it is a privilege to watch our students evolve—not just as performers, but as individuals.
I look forward to another wonderful year of growing together through music. Thank you for your continued support and for being such an active part of our band family.

Frequently Asked Questions:
Why should we choose band as an elective?
It’s awesome! Playing an instrument is a full-brain workout. Studies show that music students often perform better in math, language arts, and foreign languages because band strengthens focus, memory, and spatial reasoning.
It’s a team activity: In the band, there is no bench. Every student is a “starter” who plays a vital role in every rehearsal and performance. It shifts the mindset from “me” to “us,” teaching high-level cooperation and accountability.
Great social environment for middle school: Band provides an immediate “home base” and a supportive community. It simplifies the transition between schools by giving students a ready-made group of friends and mentors before they even walk through the door.
Long-term benefits: Beyond the joy of performing, band builds “soft skills” like discipline and leadership that are essential for future careers. Most importantly, it provides a lifelong gift; while many adults regret quitting music, very few regret sticking with it.
How does a beginning student get started?
We begin with a two-week selection process where students explore their options—including flute, oboe, bassoon, clarinet, trumpet, French horn, trombone, euphonium, tuba, and percussion—and submit their top choices. We then work together to ensure a balanced ensemble.
Once choices are finalized, we send out all the information to parents, and we host an Instrument Rental Night with Rhapsody Music to make getting those instruments as convenient as possible.
We strongly advise against purchasing “no-name” instruments from online or big-box retailers. These are often poor quality, difficult to play, and impossible to repair. An inferior instrument leads to frustration; we want to ensure your student has a reliable tool that sets them up for success.
Just show up! We will guide your student and your family through every step of the process, from the first note to the final concert.
Does my child need to know how to read music to join the band?
Not at all. All your child needs is a great attitude and a desire to learn. Our music programs provide a fantastic foundation, and we build on those skills starting from day one. You’ll be amazed at how quickly they’ll be reading music and performing pieces they never thought possible.
What are the costs associated with the band?
There is an annual Fair Share fee, which is $145 and bridges the gap between district funding and our program’s operating costs. This covers nearly everything your student needs for the year, including sheet music, method books, uniforms, event entry fees, and additional guest instructors.
The Fair Share fee does not include the instrument itself. Certain instruments are available for rent directly through the school, while others are rented from local music stores. Once your student selects their instrument, you will receive specific costs and we will facilitate local instrument rentals.
Will my child be graded in Band?
Yes. Band is an academic elective, and students receive grades based on the Florida Next Generation Sunshine State Standards. Grades will be calculated on regular playing tests and in-class assessments to track progress. Because band is a performance-based course, attendance at scheduled performances and concerts will be required. A full calendar of performance dates will be posted at the start of the school year to help you plan.
Is there a band summer camp?
Yes. Band summer camp is hosted at SPMP every summer and is a week-long opportunity for all students who have completed at least one year of band class. It’s a great way to keep your child playing their instruments all summer. The music featured is popular and other light selections. Camps usually run from 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. for about $145 and includes a snack and camp T-shirt.
Is there after-school commitment?
We accomplish nearly all our goals during the daily band period. Outside of the school day, the only requirements are instrument practices at home, our three evening concerts, which are announced well in advance (usually November, February/March and May).
Additional after-school rehearsals are only necessary for students who choose to participate in optional events, such as the Solo and Ensemble festival.
Can my child participate in band while taking advanced classes and other activities?
Absolutely. Some of our most successful musicians are also top academic students, athletes, and club leaders. Because most of our work is completed during class, band is designed to complement—not compete with—an advanced academic and activity schedule.
Our members actively participate in NJHS, sports teams, drama, academic competitions, and just about anything else you can imagine.
Success in any subject comes down to organization and a strong work ethic. Band helps students develop the time-management skills needed for rigorous courses.
While most of our learning happens in school, a small amount of consistent home practice is all that’s needed to stay on track.
How can guardians help the band program and get involved?
Our band program thrives on parent involvement. You will receive messages from Mr. Whalen or our Band Parent Association to help volunteer onsite for concerts and special events as well as off site music festivals and our yearly theme park trip.
Because we operate as an independent 501(c)(3) nonprofit educational organization to fund instrument purchases and specialty instructors, a dedicated band parent association is essential to the program. The band parent association exists to:
- Help the music director focus on teaching, while helping with the organizational and logistical support
- Ensure that the band program has the resources it needs to thrive
- Help manage the band budget and raise funds for instruments, uniforms, trips, festivals, and other needs
- Organize volunteers for concerts, events, and band trips
- Meets monthly and only requires 2-4 hours a month of commitment
We are always looking for new members to join the Band Parent Association. To join email us @ [email protected]
