School Counseling Department

Welcome to the SPMS Guidance Department

Swiss Point’s School Guidance program is designed to promote the formation of productive and responsible citizens by ensuring the academic, career and personal/social development of all students.

Many of you may have heard about the show 13 Reasons Why which is currently on Netflix as a 13 part mini-series. The show is an extremely graphic dramatization of the main characters account of reasons why she chose to complete suicide. The series is rated TV-MA.

Several students (including middle school)  are talking about this show and some have stated that they are watching.  While we do not recommend that young teens be encouraged to watch the series, it is always the parent’s choice.  With that in mind, we would like to suggest that the parent watch it with them so that they may be able to use the opportunity to understand their child’s feelings and thoughts as they discuss the controversial and difficult topics.

Watching 13 Reasons Why may be a trigger for students who have been victims of bullying, sexual abuse and/or experience suicidal ideations or depression.  In light of that, we wanted to provide you with some background information on the show as well as resources for parents and educators.

The National Association of School Psychologists has published an article with considerations and resources for educators: The American School Counselor Association also recommends the use of this resource.
